This project was designed for a multi-age class containing students in 1st-3rd Grade. The teacher asked me to help her co-teach a lesson on symmetry. I reviewed different kinds of symmetry including bilateral and radial. We then discussed symmetry in nature and turned our focus to butterfly wings. After we viewed some examples, the students were allowed to design their own butterfly using construction paper and foam shapes. They had to be careful to make sure that the patterns on the wings mirrored one another.
