About Sarah Showalter

I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and am the eldest of four children.  I received my BS in Art Education from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and minored in Art History.   Later, I attended the University of Missouri, Columbia and earned a M.Ed. in Information Science and Learning Technologies Education Technology: Technology in Schools.

I spent my first five years teaching overseas for the Department of Defense Education Activity DDESS Guam and DoDDS Pacific.  I taught Middle School Art and Ceramics at Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo, Guam for one year.  I then transferred to Yongsan Army Garrison in Seoul, S. Korea where I was an Elementary Art Teacher for four years at Seoul American Elementary School.   I currently teach Art K-5 at Herbert J. Dexter Elementary School on Ft. Benning, GA where I have been for five years.  I am certified in Art K-12 in Pennsylvania and I also hold a DoDEA certification in Education Technology.

While living abroad in Korea, I traveled to a lot of Asian countries including:  Japan and Okinawa, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia.  I also spent a month touring Turkey in the summer of 2010.  My personal experiences and my background in Non-Western Art History give me a unique perspective when I prepare lessons for my students.  I have seen many of the countries we discuss in class and this helps me make strong cultural connections.  I often bring in items I acquired from different countries to present the students with a hands-on experience.

In my spare time, I do illustration work for ACTA Publications.  I illustrated two books, “Animals of the Bible from A-Z” and “Isaiah and the Kingdom of Peace.”  I also write and illustrate fantasy-adventure stories.
